Tucked away in the Southeast corner of Nipomo off the 101 the historic Dana Adobe — home of Boston Sea Captain William Dana and his wife Maria Josefa Carrillo from 1839 through 1899. By his marriage to Maria the couple was granted a 37,888 acre ranch – known as Rancho Nipomo – in 1837. Dana was the architect who designed this family home where they welcomed famous guests such as John C. Fremont and Henry Tefft. Maria had 21 single births with 13 children living to adulthood. After undergoing a significant and meticulous restoration, the adobe hosts docent lead tours and special events where its’ rich and colorful past is brought to life.
In past years, the friends of the Dana Adobe would put on an event just in time for Halloween called the Ghost Tours. Guests could listen to stories of intrigue, mystery and deaths that are not normally shared with the public. You would be amazed to learn untold historical facts about this home built over 181 years ago. This is the oldest structure between Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa and Mission Santa Ynez. Imagine it in its’ prime as docents dressed in period costume pass through the candlelit adobe. If you love history, stories of intrigue and want a a good spooky case of goosebumps, these tours were a good fun walk through history while offering a little bit of scare during the Halloween season. Hopefully they host those again in the future.
Currently the adobe is closed to the public but you are welcome to walk the grounds and enjoy the outside of the home. The Dana Adobe is located at 671 Oakglen Ave. Nipomo.
